The Latino community has grown here at Virginia Tech and we take pride in ensuring that the community's voice is heard not only on campus, but in the surrounding area. We celebrate and embrace our Latino heritage, and make an effort to share it with everybody we interact with. Our organizations work hard to ensure that every student feels a sense of familia by establishing a home away from home through their events and programs. Feel free to look through the website and figure out which organizations interest you. We are sure you will find one you can identify with most. But remember, LASO is here to serve YOU so feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns.

April 23-24, 2010

The G.A.N.A.S. outreach program is aimed at inviting Northern Virginia high school students for a weekend stay at Virginia Tech. Throughout the weekend there will be workshops promoting the STEM fields through critical dialogues, hands-on activities, and informational sessions. G.A.N.A.S. will be the only event at Virginia Tech aimed primarily towards gaining primarily Hispanic peoples interests in the STEM fields, as well as promote other minority interests. While our program does seek to outreach to an area relatively distant from Virginia Tech in comparison to the nearby cities, its purpose is to attract a more diverse audience by appealing to a larger audience with a substantial minority population.VOLUNTEERS AND HOSTS ARE NEEDED!! CHRISTINE CHAVEZ
(granddaughter of Cesar Chavez)

She will be here at Virginia Tech to give an engaging talk about: Civil Rights, Social Justice, & Labor Equality.

Chavez has a made a lifetime commitment to public service, civil rights and the labor movement. Born in California, Christine was surrounded by the farm worker movement. For years, she worked with the United Farm Workers Union, the organization her grandfather Cesar Chavez helped to co-found 40 years ago.

Recently, Christine joined Rev. Al Sharpton to announce the formation of the Latino and African American Leadership Alliance in response to the escalating violence between Latinos and African Americans.

Christine Chavez work is based on the values passed down to her from her grandfather: the fight for civil rights, social justice and labor equality.

The Latino Association of Student Organizations hopes to unite the Latino community here at Virginia Tech, and to raise awareness of our culture as well as our growing presence on campus.

We have designed this new website as the gateway for anyone wanting to learn about the Latino community here at Virginia Tech, including knowledge of each of our constituent organizations, as well as details of their upcoming events.

Although the website is still under construction, we will soon also provide resources for current and prospective students, such as faculty contacts and information on scholarship opportunities.

Thank you for visiting our site, and feel free to contact us if you need any additional information.

Sincerely,

Your LASO Executive Board

LASO Welcomes Two Organizations

March 1, 2010Posted by Ramon Mata

On February 2, 2010, the Latino Association of Student Organizations voted to grant admission to two new constituent organizations, SalsaTech, and Students Helping Honduras.

As the official salsa club of Virginia Tech, SalsaTech's mission is to introduce the love of salsa and several other forms of Latin dance to the Virginia Tech community. Through the art of dance, those that participate in the club are immersed into several Latin cultures through music, rhythm, friends, family, and community. They serve as a fun, friendly environment facilitating their members' growth in relationships, dance, and diversity.

The mission of Students Helping Honduras is to build a movement of young leaders to empower orphaned and vulnerable children in Honduras. In February 2006, Students Helping Honduras (SHH) became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Three months later, students from the University of Mary Washington and William & Mary came together to raise $148,000 to build an education center and begin sustainability projects in a local orphanage. By the same time the following year, students from five different universities, including Virginia Tech, had raised $285,000 to help build homes for 72 families. That same year, SHH built a temporary structure to serve as a school in Honduras.
